The Graham Barker Rotary Award for Young People

rotary_wheel_transp

The late Graham Barker was a well-known local businessman and a highly esteemed member of the Rotary Club of Uttoxeter for 33 years. Graham was always very supportive of any charitable giving which benefited young people, especially in the Uttoxeter area.

It is the wish of both the family and the Rotary Club of Uttoxeter that monies given in his memory should be used to benefit young people. It has therefore been decided that an annual Graham Barker Rotary Award for Young People will be given as follows:

1) the competition will be open to all young people who are aged 14 to 18 years on the 31st December 2009 and who live or go to school within an area of seven miles from Uttoxeter.

Burton Hospitals - Planning for the future

Planning For The Future – Your Views

A major survey on services at Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been launched this week.

The survey aims to build a picture of what local people in East Staffordshire and South Derbyshire see as priority areas for developments in services at Queen's and will form the basis of the annual plan.

Chief Executive Helen Ashley said: "Our vision and purpose is to provide excellent community and secondary care health services close to and for local people.

"In order to serve the local population to best effect, we aspire to provide as broad a range of services as possible, in settings that are the most appropriate.

"This is done in response to local needs and in collaboration with patients, members and partners.

"We are asking our public members to help us by completing a short questionnaire outlining their views on possible future developments.

"Everyone's views are valued and when considering people's suggestions, it will be important to develop those ideas which benefit the majority of the people we serve."

Cannock Chase (Forest) Memorial Triangle

Financial Market Bulletin - Jan 25th 2010

See-Saw Recovery

Here in the UK, the path to economic recovery continues to be uneven with positive numbers mixed with less encouraging ones. Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said vehicle production rose by 58.5% in December – the sharpest jump in almost 34 years – helped by the government’s car scrappage scheme. “The significant rise in December vehicle production is welcome news and signals some greater stability across global automotive markets” said the society’s CEO. However, separate figures from the Office of National Statistics showed December retail sales growth that was much weaker than expected at 0.3% - down on the 1.1% predicted by economists. And the chances of a consumer-led recovery seem increasingly optimistic as other ONS data showed that wage growth hit a record low in the three months to November, with average pay in the private sector failing to rise at all.

Over here - WW2 American Troops

The first American troops to arrive in our part of the world arrived in 1942.  They came to what became known as Sudbury Camp (nearly in Marchington).

A hospital was built at the present site of HMP Prison. A great marshalling yard was built outside Sudbury Railway Station.

The first American troops were transportation types, not infantrymen.  Firstly, they were all white, then black soldiers arrived.

Henry Fenwick Pickering - Doveridge

I am trying find detail about the career of Henry Fenwick Pickering who is buried under the yew at St. Cuthbert's and whose obituary records a rather large funeral for a man who had been in Doveridge only 3 years as manager of the cooperative. He had formerly taught school for some 10 years in Silverdale in Staffordshire and was known there as "Poet of the Village." The obituary is from the Uttoxeter paper. I would like to find the reasons for his popularity, his place in the social world of Doveridge, anything he wrote.

Uttoxeter - Hamlet to Town

The main areas of Anglo-Saxon settlements were already established by the late 6th century. The manors of pre conquest land owners were substantial and, with the inclusion of numerous appendages, lay mostly along river valleys and fertile plains. The smaller manors were settled later and, in general, held by lesser men.

To the north of the county the large areas of waste land and moorland supported a sparse population and even as the land became more forgiving as it reached the lower reaches of the Dove and the Churnet the population was no more than 1.6 people per acre.

The conclusions drawn from the Domesday survey indicate the gathering of groups in hamlets and villages that supported a basic system of agriculture. Areas between villages were largely unoccupied except where practical demands necessitated such things as the removal of timber or the operation of a water mill.

The shortage of arable land and meadows restricted the ambition of villager and serf alike, the lord of the manor generally controlling both labour and expansion.
